The challenge of postpartum depression is coming to the forefront, allowing women and their families to get the support and help needed. In addition, this article describes how the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force has recommended that support is provided prior to childbirth in order to decrease the risk for postpartum depression.
It is clear from my work with mothers and infants that not only do women experience depressive symptoms, but anxiety is often present as well. In addition to talking, I find that incorporating ways to bring attention to one’s body in sessions, i.e. Somatic Experiencing techniques, helps to decrease feelings of anxiety and depression, allowing more space to connect with baby.
